ROAD SAFETY INFORMATION
AND MAPS

It is that time of year again when our roads may become icy because of freezing temperatures. A new feature on our web page this year is a map of Lopez Island, Orcas Island and San Juan Island showing the routes and their priority for sanding and/or snow removal. These maps are in a pdf format.

We have also installed the Bluestar System again this year. This is a series of guidepost mounted temperature sensitive, highly reflective blue symbols indicating freezing or near freezing temperatures that can be seen from some distance away. The temperature reported is specific to each guidepost location. Bluestar reflectors report the temperature by changing color from white, at 36 degrees Fahrenheit, graduating to totally blue, at 30 degrees Fahrenheit.

When the reflectors indicate the temperature is freezing it does not mean that the road is icy, it indicates it could be icy if there is enough moisture present, and drivers should use caution.

This system is installed along selected sections of county road. They will be removed in the spring when the threat of freezing temperatures has passed. Questions or comments are welcome at 370-0500 during regular business hours.
