The Planning & Adoption Process
What is your view of the best way we can reduce, reuse, recycle or dispose of our solid waste?

Input from people throughout the county will be sought during the development, review and adoption of the plan. The county administration intends for the revised solid and hazardous waste management plan to be based on local community values and needs.

Preliminary Information Gathering In addition to researching and describing the existing solid waste services, Staff planners will participate in preliminary focus groups to scope major issues and goals across the community.

Budget cuts in 2009 & 2010 have forced
reductions in service days
Islanders' experience and opinions will also be sought through a survey mailed to a random sample of approximately half the county addresses. The addresses will include all of the islands in the county with mail delivery. The survey will be more widely available on line to anyone who wants to participate.

County staff will hold public meetings on each of the three major islands to review and comment on the findings from the preliminary scoping and from the survey. Extensive public involvement throughout the planning process will help to develop a plan that is tailored to the unique conditions of the islands and their communities.

As the draft plan becomes ready for the formal public participation process, it will be regularly posted online.

The complete draft will be available to read at County libraries, as well as online. Once complete, the draft will be reviewed by the county solid waste advisory committee, the County Council, the Department of Ecology, and the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission.
