State Board Will Hear Case Involving Barged House

The Shorelines Hearings Board will be in Friday Harbor to hold a hearing regarding the house that was barged to Davison Head on San Juan Island last year. The hearing will take place at the Key Bank Garden Room on November 7 and 8, 2001 beginning at 9 a.m. At issue will be the appropriate setback for the house. Only those persons who are identified as witnesses by the parties will be allowed to testify. Other people are welcome to observe.

On October 25, 2001, the Board granted the County's motion for partial summary judgment on the issue of whether the owners of the house had violated the County's shoreline rules. The Board held that Grant Beck, County Permit Center Director, properly determined that the owners had violated these shoreline rules by cutting the vegetation water-ward of the house site, grading without a permit, and failing to timely plant new vegetation.

"The County is pleased with the Board's ruling as it significantly reduces the number of issues for the hearing," said Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Alan A. Marriner, representing San Juan County.
