CAMPFIRE BAN LIFTED AT ALL SAN JUAN COUNTY PARKS CAMPGROUNDS

Due to recent precipitation and cooler temperatures, the burn ban has been lifted for San Juan, Odlin, and Shaw County Park campgrounds. County Parks asks that the public exercise great care with all flammable items.

If warm, dry weather returns, a campfire ban may again be imposed.

IT'S YELLOW JACKET SEASON

This time of year always brings out the flying pests – yellow jackets and wasps want to share your space!

Here are some tips for reducing impacts from these social wasps:

  • Wasps are especially aggressive around food, so keep foods (including pet food) and drinks covered or put away and keep garbage in tightly sealed garbage cans. Once food is discovered by wasps, they will continue to hunt around that location long after the source has been removed.
  • Plan meals for before sunrise or after sunset. Wait to serve food and drink until people are ready to eat. Examine glasses, cans, and other containers before drinking from them to check for wasps that may have flown inside. If a wasp flies to your food, wait for it to fly away or gently brush it away. If only a few yellow jackets are bothering your activity, ignoring them or capturing them with a net and crushing them may be sufficient.
  • People are most often stung in late summer, when wasp colonies stop breeding new workers; the existing workers search for sugary foods and are more likely to come into contact with humans.
  • If you get stung, baking soda or meat tenderizer pastes are popular home remedies. If you know you are at risk of severe reaction to a wasp sting, bring your personal medication.
  • If you see a wasp nest, please let park staff know.

Please don’t bring your own traps! Park staff is actively working to manage the problem.

CAMPFIRES BANNED AT COUNTY PARKS

Due to extremely dry conditions, a burn ban is now in effect at all San Juan County parks and campgrounds. At this time briquettes may be used in designated fire rings and propane cook stoves are allowed for cooking. County Parks asks that the public exercise great care with all flammable items. Also, remember that personal fireworks are banned in all of San Juan County.

County Parks will issue an update if the situation changes.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR FERRY TRAVELERS TO THE SAN JUANS

Washington State Ferries (WSF) has begun accepting vehicle reservations for some routes in the San Juans. You can find more information on this reservation system and make your ferry reservations at http://www.takeaferry.com. You can return to the Parks home page for a link, too.

Members of a local order of nuns operated the ferry landing at Shaw Island every day for over 27 years, rain or shine. They've now moved on, and new faces greet ferry travelers.

Aside from narrow, empty roads and Arcadian beauty, a small grocery store at the landing, and one park & campground at sandy Shaw County Park, Shaw Island has no commercial amenities. Shaw has an area of 7.7 square miles. Population is 165.
