San Juan County Environmental Health Manager Mark Tompkins reports that, to date, he has heard praise from local employers, and no reports of problems from applicants for Food Worker Cards using the online Food Safety training and testing system.

The online system,  available in San Juan County since last month enables anyone who needs a Food Worker Card to get the required training, take a test and obtain the card via almost any computer with access to the Internet.

However, the online system requires the applicant to pay a $10 fee via a MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or Bank Debit card and that has been a difficulty for some people.
 
As a service for people who don’t have a credit or debit card, or simply wish to pay in cash, the County Health and Community Services Department has set up a dedicated computer station for Food Worker Card Applicants at its main office in Friday Harbor.

The computer is available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning at 8 a.m. on weekdays, except Wednesdays. The training and test generally takes 45 minutes to an hour, so applicants should begin the training no later than 3 p.m. The $10 fee can be paid with cash, check or money order.
